Tornado Warning

It is important to take these seriously. A couple have been confirmed by trained weather spotters (at night!), and that includes the one aiming at the town of Savannah, Tennessee.

12:37 AM - That is the only confirmed one. They just have two statements out on it at the same time.

But tornadoes are difficult to confirm at night. And in any of these polygons, people need to get into a small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy house, away from windows - and cover your body in case of debris, especially protect your head.

Tuned in to News Channel 5 in Nashville for the moment tonight. I like to vary it up.

12:46 - Note from SPC: Two tornadoes have debris signatures, one is back in Northern MS. But the one headed for Savannah, TN has also been confirmed by SKYWARN spotters. Atmospheric conditions and observations about these two supercell thunderstorms make it clear that a risk for tornadoes - even a strong tornado - exists in this general vicinity over the next couple hours.

12:51 - Let's take a look at these up close.

This tornado affecting Henderson, McNairy, Hardin, Chester, and Decatur Counties has a well-defined hook echo as well as the velocity couplet. There is large hail golfball-sized or larger in this supercell thunderstorm. And at times there has been a lowering of the correlation coefficient, showing debris lofted up into the air, backing up what weather spotters have already told us, that this is a confirmed tornado. If you know anybody in the path of this, give them a call.

12:55 - Then the warning for Desoto, Marshall, and Tate Counties in Mississippi . . . this also is a confirmed tornado. It's been confirmed by radar, which we can do now in the age of dual-pol a lot easier.

But even on classic radar, people could have noticed that pronounced hook echo.

Anyway got an extension of the Tennessee storm so hang on . . .

12:59 - Actually it's a new one, for Humphreys, Hickman, and Dickson County in Middle Tennessee. This is only radar-indicated, but please respect Tornado Warnings tonight and do not wait for a confirmation.

1 AM - This includes the town of Dickson as well as Tennessee City.

And I have to say that's a pretty impressive couplet.

1:02 - Here's the broader view. Those two polygons highlighted a sharper red are the confirmed tornadoes. But I'd respect all tornado warnings tonight.

New post since Waynesboro is included for the confirmed tornado.
