Tornado Warning (Observed)

This one is confirmed, broadcast media in Mississippi reported it. Don't know which channel. But this does include Muscle Shoals, will post updates here. Take your precautions. Take this seriously. And protect your body, especially your head, from falling or flying debris while sheltering from this. If you have a safety helmet, put it on as you go to shelter.

9:58 - It's a Mississippi station, but I think Matt Laubhan is doing a great job of covering this. And Chelsea Aaron is also on WAFF-48. Their news is about to come on.

10:01 PM - Folks in Florence and Muscle Shoals, I'd be in shelter for this and watch the progress of this storm from a safe place. Take a phone or tablet or laptop or small radio with you to keep up with the weather, but main thing is be in a safe place. This tornado has been confirmed, and you can't fool around with things like this.

10:04 - And here's more of the broad view. We've still got that severe thunderstorm moving out of Lawrence County into Giles County in TN.

People on the campus of UNA need to be sheltering from this confirmed tornado on the Alabama side. If you're in a dorm, get to the lowest floor in a small room like a bathroom or hallway away from windows.

More important, if you live in an apartment, I know lots of colleges have apartments too, you need to visit your neighbors downstairs. You don't want to be up on a top floor apartment when a tree could fall or a window blow out from the winds of a tornado if there is anything you can do about it. Those tend to be heavily damaged, while there might be little or no damage to the ground floor apartment.

Before the storm gets there to Florence/the Shoals though, it is going through some really rural areas for now. So we have to assume that this is still doing damage on the ground, even though we might not get a lot of reports in the middle of the night in rural Alabama. Just doesn't work that way. But this was confirmed earlier in Mississippi, before it crossed the state line. People in the path need to get to shelter and stay there.

10:09 - Hopefully the country folks in Colbert/Lauderdale County do not need extra reminders to take something like this seriously. They'll probably play things safe. But here is a radar update. It still looks bad on radar.

I'd worry more about the college students or people who might be out somewhere in the city of Florence or somewhere near there. Need to get into a lower, central room or hallway of a sturdy building, away from windows. It's Saturday night, but hey, when I was in college, there was a game room that was a basement where people would pile in during tornado warnings. And people do need to take this seriously. Same goes for if you're out anywhere, a restaurant or something. If the restaurant is not getting people into somewhere like a cooler, then I'd get into a bathroom.

10:13 - Meanwhile the Tornado Warning for Lawrence County has expired and continues in Giles County TN as a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, same storm.

Even without a debris signature, confidence is good that we have a tornado in progress here - the storm headed toward Florence/Shoals.

10:19 - As you can see in latest polygon it is out of Franklin County.

10:20 - And it sure looks like this tornado is going to hit somewhere between Florence and Muscle Shoals here.

Remember in your place of shelter, if you have anything - pillow, blankets, or can get up under something to protect body from falling debris, do it. And if you have something like a bike or football helmet, put it on, just in case there is debris flying in the winds. Protecting your head is very important if you can take an extra step to do it.

10:23 PM - WAFF-48 just reported a tornado showing up on UNA camera, power flashes.

And here's a look at it from Twitter/X.

10:25 - Like I said, you can't fool around with this. This is a confirmed tornado with a fairly long track so far. It is doing damage. Need to be in a small central room on the lowest floor of a strong building or sturdy house, away from windows - not in a mobile home - not out driving. And protect your body, especially your head, from potential debris.

Going to start a new post for the new warning upstream from the Shoals.
