Definitely take cover anywhere in these polygons. This tornado has been confirmed and is considered a Particularly Dangerous Situation.
So get into a basement if you've got one. If not, get into a small room on the lowest floor of a sturdy house (don't stay in a mobile home), near the center of the building, away from windows. A hallway is also fine.
But hunker down and shield your body as best you can from debris that could fall or fly around in the winds. If you have a safety helmet like a bike or football helmet, use that to protect your head. But protect your body, especially your head. This is a confirmed, damaging tornado happening at night. When the NWS says it's a particularly dangerous situation, that's what they mean. If you know somebody in the path of this, give them a call . . . or more than one call if that's what it takes. Because this is a life-threatening situation.
And the rest of that storm besides the tornado is really rough too. This is a supercell thunderstorm with probably golfball sized hail.
1:25 AM - And there is a Tornado Emergency issued for the town of Slayden in Mississippi, confirmed large and damaging tornado aiming for Grand Junction, about to cross into Tennessee.
This has the hook echo, velocity couplet (strong), and a crazy-strong debris signature.
1:29 - And here's a note from NWS Nashville on the tornado aiming roughly at Linden and Hohenwald. The polygon . . . it looks like it may end up closer to Lobelville than Hohenwald, but anywhere in the warning polygon, stay sheltered. This is a very dangerous situation.
And like they say, help us out. Some people are probably asleep. And you can't afford to sleep through a storm like this. This tornado is doing damage, could be significant damage. Have to take it very seriously. So make a phone call if you need to.
1:36 - It's coming up on Linden.
1:38 - And this other one headed for Grand Junction, you can tell we've got a damaging tornado just from the hook echo on reflectivity. But debris signatures have confirmed that the rotation is on the ground. Also a very dangerous situation out that way.
1:40 - Now these are supercells. Further North, Nashville is included in a large Severe Thunderstorm Warning as the squall line comes in. And that's for 60 mph wind gusts and hail the size of quarters.
1:43 - Now they've extended this with a new warning polygon as the tornado is headed from Linden to Centerville. Lobelville and Hohenwald are clipped by this warning polygon, so even there at the edges, I'd be sheltered just as a course of least regret. It's better to play it safe in situations like this. Radars can make slight errors of where a storm is located sometimes, and tornadoes can change direction quickly too. One time I almost didn't take shelter while on the edge of a Tornado Warning, and that confirmed tornado took a turn in my direction. So don't make that mistake. Go ahead and take cover, play it safe.
1:47 - Behind that, we have another supercell with a confirmed tornado moving from Grand Junction. People in Bolivar, Silerton, and Selmer and communities near there, anywhere in this polygon, need to get to shelter and stay there. This is a very dangerous storm. If you know somebody in the path, make sure they are awake and can get to shelter.
1:52 - And just in case the message isn't getting across to any Hispanics in the path.
2 AM - So this tornado is getting pretty close to Centerville.
May start a new post when the new warning comes out, will likely include Fairview and/or Franklin.
