Stay in a good safe place while these storms pass. These storms do have a history tonight, including blowing a tree over on somebody's house earlier.
12:21 AM - Decatur, Athens, Huntsville, Hartselle, all the way up to New Hope, Skyline, and Hytop are included in a Special Weather Statement now for a part of the squall line capable of 40 mph wind gusts and some small hail. This is below severe limits, and there are no consistent signs of any part of these storms trying to produce a tornado.
But sometimes people like to know when they're getting a stronger part of a line of storms, even if they are not thought to be a direct threat to life and property (beyond, you know, hopefully all of you have enough sense not to go out and dance around in the lightning).
12:24 - Got another large polygon for a Special Weather Statement affecting Millport, Vernon, Fayette, Hamilton, Winfield, Haleyville, up to Double Springs.
These storms are not severe, but they could produce wind gusts up to about 50 mph, some small hail, and are producing torrential rainfall. So if you don't have to be driving through it, I wouldn't be. But this part of the line, the storms are not severe at the moment. The NWS is just letting you know of a strong thunderstorm that isn't a direct threat to life and property . . . at least for people who have enough sense to get in and out of the rain. Which hopefully is most of my readers here.
If any of you get struck by lightning, I take no responsibility. I never tell people to go out and dance around in it. I used to work with some people at a steel plant who did like to venture out and dance in cloud-to-ground lightning that was nearby, tempting fate. So if I growl about how goofy people can be sometimes, hey, I speak from experience.
12:31 - Wayne, Lawrence, and Giles Counties in TN have been cleared from the Tornado Watch. Their severe weather threat is over besides some flooding issues that quite frankly, a lot of us are going to be dealing with.
12:32 - And here's the broad view I've been trying to show for the past five minutes or so. Technology is great when it works, but sometimes it takes two or three tries.
I think it's great that the storms are under severe limits as the squall line approaches Huntsville. Hopefully this trend will hold, but we are under a Tornado Watch until 3 AM CDT. And you have to remain alert with a system like this to see if it wants to throw you a curveball at the last minute. I've seen lots of them do that over the years, and you never know where a storm along the line is liable to fire up all of a sudden.
For now I'm enjoying the lull in the action.
Spoke too soon. About to post a new warnign that does include Huntsville.
