Tornado Warning

People in Franklin County, especially around Red Bay, go ahead and seek shelter as well. About to post the new graphic of that warning that came out just after this one.

1:37 - This tornado was confirmed earlier by radar and storm spotters. From Amory, MS all the way up to Russellville, AL, people need to be in shelter. And cover your head while in that lowest most central room of your home, protect your body from falling or flying debris.

1:40 - Just a note, this tornado is going to pass well Northwest of Hamilton. The warning only includes the far NW corner of Marion County. I just posted the text of their warning because it came out shortly before this one for Franklin County, but it is for the same storm.

1:44 - Vina, Belgreen, Russellville, stay sheltered. The rotation signature is currently pretty weak, but this storm has a history of producing a confirmed tornado. And on days like today, storms tend to cycle up and down.

1:48 - James Spann also has a live stream going. I bounce around on that stuff.

Also in the Birmingham market, looks like J.P. Dice is putting in a cameo and helping the team today. Good to see him again.

And Taylor Sarallo is doing the fine job she always does, along with Jason Simpson.

1:52 - The storm mode is a little bit messy with this event, and while all the storms with warnings are dangerous, the ones that are most dangerous are currently over Southern Mississippi and are tracking Northeast, will eventually affect Alabama over next hour or two.

1:58 - And now we have a Flash Flood Warning for Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin Counties.

2 PM - Here's the same graphic in English. Sometimes the Spanish version shows up first.

Looks like a comma-head signature trying to form there in Northern Franklin County. But anywhere within that Tornado Warning polygon, stay in shelter. It is being allowed to expire for that sliver of Marion County but continues for Franklin County for the next 10 minutes or so. Also looks like hail to ping pong ball size in this storm.

2:07 PM - Here is a look at the tornado that hit Tylertown, MS earlier. These supercells are tracking toward West Central Alabama.

2:09 - And now the Tornado Warning for this same storm has been extended up through Muscle Shoals.

Brad Travis has a camera on this storm but admits that you're not going to be able to see this tornado, too much rain wrapping around it.

2:14 - We are not getting very good velocity data on these storms in Northwest Alabama, but everyone in these polygons needs to be in their tornado safe place - small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy house (not a mobile home!), away from windows. And it's a good idea to shield your body in case of debris, especially your head.

Anyway that's why I'm not showing velocity. The radar from Columbus may be overwhelmed to an extent. But we've seen clues in reflectivity that these tornado warnings are justified. And this storm produced a confirmed tornado earlier in MS.

A friend of mine made a video showing where he would take his kids in the hallway and pull a mattress over them in the event of a tornado warning later today. And his next-door neighbors got sent that video by the kids apparently. And now they are ready for a similar safety plan with their grandkids. And that's what we need today. We all have to work together in an event like this to help keep each other safe.

2:20 - Up in TN, damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes remain possible within or just ahead of the squall line. That might not be quite as dangerous as isolated supercells, but any tornado is dangerous. Any severe thunderstorm is dangerous.

2:25 - The velocity signature may be not the strongest right now, but please have respect for the history of this storm and stay sheltered anywhere within this warning polygon, which is being trimmed back as the storm moves Northeast. This did produce a confirmed tornado earlier, and there is some rotation still showing up. This is not the greatest part of the state for radar coverage anyway on a busy day, data can get sort of jumbled up and we have to read between the lines.

2:28 - Baseball sized hail was just reported to NWS Huntsville from Colbert Heights. That is yet another sign there is likely a tornado nearby. And besides, as my Granny would have said, that's the kind of hail that could just about knock a hole in your head.

So it's important to stay sheltered in these areas.

2:31 - And here is the broad view again. There are plenty of storms to still watch in Mississippi.

Even in the severe thunderstorm warnings, I'd stay sheltered. The hail can be very large, and if you get a wind gust even to 60 mph, it's a dangerous enough situation that it's good to be in a safe place. Even if the storm does not try to produce a tornado.

And there is a new severe thunderstorm warning for Lawrence and Giles Counties in TN including Pulaski. Lawrenceburg and Lynnville, Loretto are also included in that polygon.

2:34 - And from Muscle Shoals up to Lexington, stay sheltered for baseball sized hail, strong winds, and a possible tornado, also lots of lightning in this storm cluster.

New severe thunderstorm warning that includes Limestone County, going to make new post for that.
