Severe T'Storm Warning (Tornado Possible)

It ain't over till it's over with these events.

I would probably go ahead and shelter for this one since it has shown some rotation at times, and a tornado could quickly develop, out of respect for the history of these storms today.

Having said that, nothing jumps out on velocity as a tornado couplet right now. It is more likely to be damaging straight line winds and some large hail.

6:21 PM - Anywhere in that polygon, I'd at least be inside away from windows. Better if you are in a small room or hallway on the lowest floor of a sturdy house, not a mobile home.

6:27 - Note from SPC not to let our guard down. Conditions still favor at least some risk for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

6:29 - And here's a neat video of the tornado when it came through Sipsey. I guess tomorrow they will survey and see how bad it was.

6:30 - There is also a new Flash Flood Warning that covers most of Cullman County and stretches across many counties all the way up into Tennessee.

Hopefully not many people are driving. Even in a moment where there are no severe storms going on at the moment, it sure is a mess to get out in. And I wouldn't if I didn't have to. Plus we do have risk for more severe weather from now through about 8-9 PM.

And by the way I misspoke . . . we do have that one severe thunderstorm warning still that stretches up to Winchester. That's why I made this post. It's been a day. My bad on that slipup.

If you're near New Market, Hytop, Huntland, Winchester, or Sewannee, then I'd stay in a good safe place from this severe thunderstorm warning.

6:37 - And man look at all those Flash Flood Warnings, especially in Tennessee!

The National Weather Service in Birmingham sent out a note that they are not cancelling even their Northwest counties from the Tornado Watch until they are sure the threat is over. And that is definitely the right call after what we've seen today. Yes, it could have been worse, but some people have had it pretty rough out of this weather today. And it's not over yet. Give it at least another couple hours.

6:42 - That severe thunderstorm is out of Madison County now, warning continues for Jackson County and Franklin County in Tennessee.

6:47 - That tornado down in Perry and Hale Counties is not going to affect North Alabama, so I'll let folks in Birmingham cover it. And it is not confirmed as of yet. But anybody in the path, if you happen to see this, of course take cover in that polygon.

6:51 - New severe thunderstorm warning for Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin Counties. This event has an hour or two left to go, I would guess, for North Alabama/parts of Southern Tennessee. And you can't let your guard down until you're sure an event like this is over.

6:53 - At least this is the final squall line associated with this latest warning.

6:57 - Ben Smith and Danielle Dozier still doing a great job of covering all this.

7:03 PM - Finally glancing at storm reports. Between yesterday and today, this did turn out to be a fairly decent severe weather event. I had concern that it would be worse, but from looking at this, the forecasts verified for several places across several states. Not trying to jinx it before the threat is over, but overall it seems like it underperformed today for the TN Valley. And frankly, I'm not complaining. I'll take that.

7:08 - Looking like Gordo in Pickens County got hit fairly hard too. Not enough information to guess at the strength of these tornadoes at this point. I'll probably wait on the surveys tomorrow and beyond.

I'm not sure if the reports I heard of injury from broadcast media earlier were confirmed. Things got very busy for a while there.

7:26 PM - And at this point I'm wondering if Gordo was one of the places hardest hit. Definitely looks like it for today, but mainly even compared to the stuff yesterday and last night in other states. The surveys will tell. That's South of the area I post updates for, but I did notice it while everything else was going on. And down in that part of Alabama is where we could really use another radar, that general vicinity. But NWS Birmingham still manages to issue good warnings down that way.

7:34 - Just another radar check at bottom of the hour.

You can ignore the severe thunderstorm warning in Lauderdale County, it has been cancelled even though still showing up on the radar imagery here. There is a tornado warning way down there in Bibb County.

The tornado watch is set to expire at 8 PM CDT. So in next 30 minutes we'll see if it is extended. Probably will be for at least some of our counties.

7:44 - A new Tornado Watch is being coordinated. Not sure which counties will be included this time. Plan to start a new post for that and post updates there.

Tornado warnings down in Bibb, Chilton, and Shelby Counties. But that's way South of us so unless they confirm something, going to leave that to the Birmingham broadcasters.

7:48 - Ok this new Tornado Watch is not for North Alabama. So we'll just see if they extend the time for us up here.

They actually do have a confirmed tornado in Bibb County now, and it's coming close enough to the NWS Birmingham (located in Calera, Shelby County) that they are going to the break room for shelter and transferring responsibility to the Atlanta/Peachtree City office for a little bit. And hey, I had to shelter today. It's good to take your own advice.

7:53 - I guess it's worth showing this even though it's way to the South.

7:54 - And it looks like another possible tornado is heading up toward Talladega and Anniston. Might as well report those even though out of our area, while waiting to see what they do with our Tornado Watch up here at the top of the hour.

7:56 - Well that new Watch does include Blount County and goes until 3 AM CDT.

8 PM - James Spann is all over that storm down in Shelby, Chilton, and Bibb Counties that has had a radar-confirmed tornado.
