Warmer Days Return, Pretty Much Staying Dry

FORECAST:

Thursday (High 86, Low 63): Sunny. Patchy fog possible in the morning.

Friday (High 88, Low 64): Sunny. Warm with humidity.

Saturday (High 89, Low 66): Mostly sunny. Warm.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK:

Sunday (High 89, Low 66): Mostly sunny.

Monday (High 88, Low 67): Partly cloudy.

Tuesday (High 86, Low 66): Partly cloudy with a 20% chance of showers.

Wednesday (High 83, Low 65): Partly cloudy with a 20% chance of showers.

DISCUSSION:

It was a partly to mostly sunny day in Cullman with a High of only 81 degrees, Low of 59. Which was fortunate for me since my air conditioner picked today to konk out. A temperamental cat doesn't like that and spends a lot of time cherishing an open windowpane. Winds have been generally light today from the North/Northwest, although we've had a breeze kick up every now and then. The High was 88 in Jasper with a Low of 59. So I hope your a/c units are in good working order down that way. Or that you at least remember how to use an old-fashioned fan and stuff like lemonade. Still sorta' feels like summer temps. And we have some haze this evening in Haleyville, noted on the official observations. Who'd a' thought? But overall it's been a sunshiny day there too, High of 83, Low of 57.

And let's peek at the rest of the region, not overdo it, but just the two key cities to give us an overview . . .

Huntsville, the Rocket City, was partly cloudy today with a High of 81 and Low of 64. And there were times today when the Music City, Nashville, had more clouds than sunshiny-ness. WHOA! We'll have to look into that, won't we? Nashville had a High of 85 and Low of 68. Those warmer Low temperatures also happen with more humid air, don't get as much radiational cooling overnight.

Those extra clouds are coming from an area of low pressure over Eastern Tennessee. You can see another area of low pressure out in the Atlantic, East of Virginia. Those have been efficient rain producers over the past couple days out that way. Around here, that closer of the two centers of low pressure has been producing the clouds mainly North of the Tennessee River. Down here, we are South of the TN River and have seen mostly clear skies. Notice there is not much in the way of rain in our region either. The few echoes showing up are very light, and a lot of that is probably virga, not even reaching the ground.

Farther North, in the Ohio Valley and closer to the Great Lakes region, high pressure is in control. And out just East of the Rockies, we have a cold front. With high pressure behind it in places like California, Nevada, Arizona.

The high pressure is going to park itself over our region more strongly over the next few days. Looks like that front will mainly affect the MIdwest and Great Lakes region.

We might see some patchy fog tonight/in the morning like we have for a few nights now. The Low should be about 63. The High tomorrow should get up to about 86 or 87 under sunny skies.

Then looks like plenty of sunshine again Friday with a High in the 88-90 range, Low about 63-65 range.

Weather looks similar for Saturday, might see a few more fair-weather clouds coming back, but it's mainly only weather nerds that stop to think about such details.

That slow-moving cold front looks like it will finally affect our weather somewhat by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. For earlier in the week, Sunday and Monday, will only mention some clouds coming back. Sunday looks mostly sunny with a High near 90 and Low in the mid-60's.

Looks like more moisture return by Monday but not enough for rain, just an increase in clouds, High in upper 80's, Low in mid-to-upper-60's.

And it looks reasonable to bring back a 20% chance of isolated rain for Tuesday and Wednesday. Lows in the mid-60's and the High for Tuesday in the mid-80's, looks like maybe dropping to the lower 80's by Wednesday as we have a lot more cloud cover.

And it's just that interesting time of year when it's still trying to turn Fall. The autumn equinox is this Sunday.

And early next month, October 3rd through 5th, is Oktoberfest in Cullman. I think the timing is slightly different for other places like Florence that celebrate it.

The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Gordon are moving Northward through the Atlantic and may redevelop over about the next week. It is expected to interact with a non-tropical low pressure system located to its Northwest. Movement is pretty slow. Any redevelopment should take several days, if it's going to happen.

An area of the Western/Northwestern Caribbean Sea is being monitored for the potential of a broad area of low pressure developing. The whole thing is hypothetical at this point. This is another one where if we see any development, it is expected to be slow. And if this system does develop, it will move slowly North or Northwest, according to trends we're seeing now.

By the way, James Spann did an incredible job in his video discussion today, of blowing all the hyperbole/panic speculation about this system out of the water. Or as he called it, "fear porn." I'm pretty sure he borrows that term from Chuck Doswell, a research meteorologist in Oklahoma known for being taciturn, who used to use terms like "disaster porn" or "storm porn." I hardly ever see anything from him anymore, ever since his tribute to Les Lemon in 2020. Anyway, if you know anybody who is unduly worried about this Caribbean system (which hasn't even developed yet), please take the time to watch James's video. It struck that perfect balance of keeping it classy but also calling out the absolute crap for what it is.

We're not going to see much rain around here any time soon. Even if we see isolated showers Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, most places should only see light amounts. Not expecting more than a trace of rain for most places, amounts generally staying well under a tenth of an inch.

Other news than weather has gotten my attention more lately. I think it's horrible when you have two assassination attempts on a former president who is running for re-election. Last time something like that happened was with Gerald Ford, two attempts in such a short time-span. I agree with that sheriff in Florida who said that the suspect's behavior was perplexing, that guy Ryan Routh, who was taken into custody. That comment is from Sheriff William Snyder, who serves Martin County, Florida.

And frankly, the whole mess is more than I care to try to sort out and express any thoughts about publicly. I know somebody who's having open-heart surgery, just got off the phone with her, and I figure there isn't much I can do about the bigger picture. I just don't see a lot going on in the larger world that I like. It feels like a lot of people are more interested in recycling the same old, same old, than trying to work toward any real solutions to move forward.

I guess since I decided against any serious social commentary at the bottom of this, I will just salute the fine folks at UAB for taking good care of people, whether it's cardiology or more routine stuff. It sort of seems wrong not to comment on such hard-hitting events that everybody knows about. But I guess another way of looking at it is that people are clobbered with it enough from other sources, so maybe if I just post weather stuff here and say little to nothing about insane news items and my personal opinions on them, that would make this site a bit of an oasis.

I just miss that quality you see on reruns of old shows like Johnny Carson, where people could talk about the serious stuff and also just clown around, and it was kept pretty respectful. The times were not always peaceful by any means, and a lot of people felt like it was worse than the world had ever been. So there is a knack for that stuff. I am just not feeling it right now. So I'm going to mostly stick to the weather.

And even that is probably going to be sporadic. With the hurricane remnants gone, we're back to the most peaceful time of year for weather anyway. I do think the British press did a better job of reporting the recent news without as much bias than anything I saw on this side of the waters. If I felt sure of everything I was saying, I might write an essay about everything that's going on. But there is so much. And almost every source of information has a strong bias. I have a few I trust more than others, but that's not saying much.

That whole tiki craze in decades past started during the Cold War. Sometimes things really do get so bad that maybe the best you can do is focus on something else for a while, instead of trying to figure it all out. It might be kind of hard when even Taylor Swift is tied into all the drama, but . . . well, check this out if you like. Some things are still just plain funny. Sometimes I stumble on them.

Or I guess there is some humor in how my cats demand open windows tonight when the air conditioner is out. They are comical all the way around, and so am I trying to figure them out.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has SKYWARN classes coming up, starting next week.

It took a while to finish this post because I got two phone calls in the middle of it. Hope the weather part makes sense anyway.

Staying Sunny and Mild

Tuesday (High 83, Low 59): Sunny. Patchy fog possible in the morning.

Wednesday (High 84, Low 58): Sunny. Patchy fog possible in the morning.

Thursday (High 85, Low 60): Sunny. Patchy fog possible in the morning.

Friday (High 86, Low 61): Sunny.

Saturday (High 87, Low 62): Sunny.

Sunday (High 85, Low 63): Mostly sunny.

Monday (High 84, Low 65): Partly to mostly sunny.

At 2:15 PM skies are partly cloudy in Cullman. The temperature is 81 degrees. The dewpoint is 66 degrees, making the relative humidity 62%. Winds are variable, generally been out of the South and East, currently sustained at only 3 miles per hour. The pressure is 30.04 inches and falling slowly at the moment.

This morning's Low was 70. We still had that humid airmass around.

We have a stationary front down in the Gulf of Mexico, no more tropical remnants around here. Out West we have an upper-level ridge of high pressure. And to our East, off the coast of the Carolinas, we have a low pressure system that may become a tropical storm soon and affect the Carolinas. We're in between those and expected to stay dry.

Now tonight, we could end up with some fog in some of the river valleys and places like Bankhead Forest. And actually each night we could see some patchy fog because of all the recent rain still being in the soil.

Looks like through the next three days, so through Thursday, we'll have a High in the 83-85 degree range under sunny skies. The Low will be near 60, probably upper 50's for a lot of us. The high pressure is going to win out in our region, even if the Carolinas and some other places like Georgia and Florida up farther North into New England end up getting some rain during this forecast period.

Beyond that, in the extended period, looks like sunny conditions continue on Friday and Saturday with Highs actually making it into the upper 80's again, Lows around 60 or so.

Then Sunday and Monday, we'll see a few clouds coming back, not expecting any rain, Highs more toward the mid-80's and Lows more toward the mid-60's.

The tropics are a little active but more bark than bite.

This low pressure system off the Carolina coast has prompted a Tropical Storm Warning for the coasts of North and South Carolina. But if it was up to me, I think it would have only been a Tropical Storm Watch. This thing might not even develop to a tropical depression before it comes inland.

Tropical Depression Gordon is staying well out in the Tropical Atlantic, looks like it will strengthen back to a tropical storm later this week and move generally North/Northeast.

And to keep it simple, we don't expect any more rain around here in a while. Even in Tennessee counties over the next seven days, amounts should stay light and spotty. Really model trends and the way our climate usually goes make it look like we'll stay mostly or all dry through the rest of this month.

And I don't even know what to say about the general news in the past 24-48 hours. Looks like some fool tried to shoot Donald Trump again, this time at a golf course, and as with the first time, this wasn't done by a Haitian immigrant or any of these other boogeymen we're supposed to be so scared of these days. I don't think this Caucasian dude was even wearing a Judas Priest or Black Sabbath T-shirt. At what point do we all have to admit these stereotypes are bogus and that not much is being done about the real problems . . . and I question how much I should comment on this stuff at all sometimes. Because Elon Musk sure could have kept his mouth shut, instead of joking around about how nobody had taken a shot at the other candidate yet. Some of this stuff lately is in far worse taste than when we see a streaker try to get some attention on the Weather Channel. Somehow in the midst of all the serious drama, Taylor Swift got roped in to everything. So I'll try to take her sage advice from back when one of my cousins was really into her and was under the impression that her real name was "Taylor Swiffer"

Okay, but seriously, thanks for reading, hope you like the nicer weather here as we're going to have the autumn equinox this coming Sunday, and I guess try to keep your heads together . . . or you know, just shake it off . . . shake it off . . . or go out and buy a swiffer . . . I've heard that they are good for mopping. And every woman I've ever talked to has said that my mopping skills could use some improvement. Actually they were nowhere near as kind as that in their assessments. But a swiffer is a terrible thing to waste. And so is a life. So I hope the rest of you find something better to do than Elon Musk or the conspiracy theorists. Until I make myself useful in the offline world today, I will amuse myself thinking of what tirades Donald Trump would go into if I ever cleaned his mansion. Or the shock and awe that Taylor Swift would express at how I could spend an hour with a mop and accomplish so little.

And that's because this is a volunteer blog. If you want an argument out of me today, you're gonna' have to pay for it

One thing I'd definitely recommend you check out that's free is one of the SKYWARN classes that are being offered by the National Weather Service offices in Birmingham and Nashville. We sometimes have a secondary severe weather season in North Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee. The timing can vary a little from year to year, but usually it's in November. So it is a good time to brush up on severe weather awareness. When the weather looks nice and peaceful for a good long while.

SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT:

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for...

* Edisto Beach, South Carolina northward to Ocracoke Inlet, North

Carolina

A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are

expected somewhere within the warning area, in this case within the

next 12 hours.

For storm information specific to your area, including possible

inland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your

local National Weather Service forecast office.

DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

----------------------

At 800 AM EDT (1200 UTC), the disturbance was centered near latitude

32.7 North, longitude 78.2 West. The system is moving toward the

northwest near 3 mph (6 km/h). A faster motion toward the northwest

or north-northwest is expected today and Tuesday, followed by a

gradual turn toward the north by Wednesday. On the forecast track,

the low will reach the coast of South Carolina this afternoon and

then move inland across the Carolinas tonight through Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.

Little change in strength is expected before the system reaches the

coast, and the low still has a chance of becoming a tropical or

subtropical storm. Weakening is forecast after the system moves

inland, and it is likely to dissipate over the Carolinas by late

Wednesday.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...60 percent.

* Formation chance through 7 days...medium...60 percent.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km)

from the center. Doppler radar data and surface observations

indicate strong winds are nearing the coast and will spread onshore

during the next few hours. NOAA buoy 41013 at Frying Pan Shoals,

North Carolina recently reported a sustained wind of 47 mph (76

km/h) and a gust of 56 mph (91 km/h). NOAA buoy 41037 offshore of

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina recently reported a sustained

wind of 38 mph (61 km/h) and a gust of 54 mph (87 km/h).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb (29.68 inches).

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

----------------------

Key messages for Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight can be found in

the Tropical Cyclone Discussion under AWIPS header MIATCDAT3 and WMO

header WTNT43 KNHC.

WIND:  Tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning

area through late this afternoon or evening.

STORM SURGE:  The combination of a storm surge and the tide will

cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising

waters moving inland from the shoreline.  The water could reach the

following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated areas if

the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...

South Santee River, SC to Oregon Inlet, NC... 1-3 ft

Neuse and Bay Rivers, NC... 1-3 ft

Pamlico and Pungo Rivers, NC... 1-3 ft

The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to

the east of the landfall location, where the surge will be

accompanied by large and dangerous waves.  Surge-related flooding

depends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, and

can vary greatly over short distances.  For information specific to

your area, please see products issued by your local National Weather

Service forecast office.

For a complete depiction of areas at risk of storm surge

inundation, please see the National Weather Service Peak

Storm Surge Graphic, available at

hurricanes.gov/graphics_at3.shtml?peakSurge.

RAINFALL: Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight will bring 4 to 8 inches

of rainfall, with isolated totals near 10 inches, across portions of

northeast South Carolina into southeast North Carolina today into

tonight. Across the remainder of North Carolina, 2 to 4 inches of

rainfall, with isolated totals near 6 inches, are expected through

Tuesday. Over much of Virginia, 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, with

locally higher amounts, are expected tonight through Wednesday.

This rainfall could lead to a risk of flash and urban flooding and

minor river flooding.

For a complete depiction of forecast rainfall associated with

Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight, please see the National Weather

Service Storm Total Rainfall Graphic, available at

hurricanes.gov/graphics_at3.shtml?rainqpf and the Flash Flood Risk

graphic at hurricanes.gov/graphics_at3.shtml?ero.

TORNADOES:  A couple of tornadoes may occur through this evening

across the eastern Carolinas.

SURF: Swells are forecast to affect portions of the coast of the

southeastern United States during the next couple of days. These

swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current

conditions.  Please consult products from your local weather office.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight Discussion Number   3

NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL       AL082024

500 AM EDT Mon Sep 16 2024

The structure of the area of low pressure off the coast of South

Carolina has seemingly become less organized during the past few

hours.  Proxy-visible satellite imagery indicates that the

low-level circulation is elongated from northeast to southwest, and

the center has not become well defined.  The associated deep

convection has a generally linear orientation and has been

displaced farther to the north and east of the center due to strong

upper-level winds.  Lastly, an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter

aircraft still measured a 2-3 degree Celsius temperature difference

at 850 mb from north to south, indicating that the frontal boundary

is diffuse but not totally gone.  Therefore, the low is still not a

tropical or subtropical cyclone.  That said, the plane measured a

peak wind of 54 kt at 6000 ft in the convection well northeast of

the center, suggesting that the current intensity is about 45 kt.

The low is drifting northwestward (325 degrees) at 3 kt, gradually

approaching the South Carolina coast.  A faster motion toward the

northwest is expected to occur today as the low moves between

mid-level high pressure over the northeastern U.S. and a trough

over the southeastern U.S.  The NHC track forecast shows the low

crossing the coast later this afternoon, which is shown by most of

the track models.  The GFS remains the notable outlier since it

initialized the low too far to the northwest and consequently has

it crossing the coast around sunrise.  After moving inland, the low

is expected to continue moving slowly northwestward and then

northward over the Carolinas through Wednesday.  The new track

forecast has been nudged westward from the previous forecast,

although there is a modest amount of uncertainty given the

ill-defined nature of the center.

The chances of the system becoming a tropical or subtropical

cyclone may be starting to decrease given the current structure, and

since it only has another 12 hours or so before moving inland.

Most of the intensity guidance also suggests that the maximum winds

should gradually decrease as the low approaches the coast, although

tropical-storm-force winds are still expected to occur within the

warning areas today.  Further weakening is forecast after the

system moves inland, and it will likely dissipate over the Carolinas

by late Wednesday.

Key Messages:

1. Tropical storm conditions are expected along portions of the

coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina within the Tropical

Storm Warning area through this evening.

2. The system will bring the potential for locally considerable

flash and urban flooding and minor river flooding across southeast

North Carolina and northeast South Carolina through tonight.  There

is also a risk of isolated flash and urban flooding across much of

the Mid-Atlantic region through Wednesday.

3. Coastal flooding and high surf are likely along portions of

the southeastern U.S. coast over the next day or two.

NOTES:

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has scheduled several SKYWARN classes, mostly online. The Nashville office has scheduled their first in-person classes in a long time. And it looks like Huntsville has one scheduled in Fayetteville the evening of the 23rd. They are likely to add more later.

These classes are free, and anyone with an interest in learning more about severe weather and/or public safety is strongly encouraged to try one out. And bring somebody with you if you like!

DISCUSSION:

It has been another rainy day in the Tennessee Valley, and some places are still dealing with flooding issues. Rainfall totals over the past two days were significant for just about all of us. The High in Cullman today was 72, and the Low was 68. It's been breezy with a lot of fog too. Huntsville saw a High of 76 and Low of 71.

Our threat for severe convective weather has ended, but yesterday did bring several damaging thunderstorm wind reports across the region. A storm survey was done for the damage in Locust Fork in Blount County. Hats off to those forecasters who got out in the mess and got this survey done so efficiently.

Let's look at a few of the others.

Well we had a couple at Good Hope in Cullman County. Let's start there. A tree came down along Highway 69 and CR-223. And there was another tree that came down along County Road 820.

Then up in Colbert County, a power pole was reported down or learning along Highway 247 in Tuscumbia. And then in Limestone County, a tree was down along Lentzville Road and Lakeside Estates near Rogersville.

There were too many wind damage reports to really collect on Thursday from the regular gradient winds as the remnants of Hurricane Francine were strongest over our area. It was minor stuff like this, mostly trees down. And fortunately, there were no reports of tornadoes anywhere around here. On Thursday, there was not enough unstable air to tap into the wind shear. Then yesterday, the wind shear was lacking. All the wind damage yesterday seems to have come from damaging straight-line winds, when we had a lot better instability to work with.

And the main trouble we've had ended up being flooding.

There's still a remnant low that the remnants of the hurricane has gotten absorbed in, back in Mississippi, along with a front stalled out to our South.

Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy and breezy, with numerous rounds of showers still possible. Doubt we have much thunder. Chance of any one spot getting wet is about 50/50. Expecting a High of about 77-78, Low near 65.

On Monday the rain is basically out of here, but will keep a minimal 20% chance in there to be on the safe side, so about a 1-in-5 chance of any one spot getting a shower then. The sun will break out a good bit, but it will still be breezy. High should be about 80 or so, Low in the lower 60's.

Then high pressure takes over in full force by Tuesday, with sunny skies, a High in the lower 80's, Low near 60. Some of the cooler pockets will see upper 50's.

And that pattern looks to hold the rest of the week, fairly typical for September. We'll generally see Highs in the lower-to-mid-80's and Lows in the upper 50's or about 60. The air looks to stay very dry in the extended, with only a few fair-weather clouds in the sky, if that.

There is an area of low pressure off the East Carolina coasts, but it isn't really tropical in nature. It could eventually develop that way over the next week, but even if so, it is not expected to influence our local weather, because of that high pressure system that will move in here Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Gordon is expected to weaken a tropical depression by Sunday, and I'm really not worried about it at all, just mentioning it in the interest of being thorough.

Additional rainfall totals will probably only get up to about another half-inch or less. So that's good news for folks who have dealt with flood waters. It'll be interesting to see our next drought monitor statement, since nobody counted on this when the last one was issued.

And in non-weather news, the paranoia continues about cat-eating in Ohio, apparently.

A journalist in Atlanta, with all due diligence, managed to find a real case of some nut actually eating a cat in Ohio. So I thought I'd also do my part by emphasizing that this woman did not eat the cat as part of any sort of religious ritual, and she wasn't even a Haitian immigrant. (They seem to be the target of this crapola at the moment. Poor folks.) Check out this news story out of Ohio for the full rundown on the whole mess. The short version is that some people are just loons who don't mind taking their insanity and cruelty out on domesticated animals that most of us would rather cherish as companions. I've known plenty of southern-born, southern-bred people over the years who could be justly charged with that as much as this woman in Ohio. Unlike her, many of them have had a tendency to escape the law. But for those of you with a sense of humor, I will simply say that my good man Salem might decide to put the hoodoo on 'em every once in a while.

There was a time in history that the Jews were singled out by the Nazis as drinking the blood of babies through straws, and before that, accused of the same thing by the Christians who were part of the Inquisitions. (Right now, it seems to mainly be the Islamic terrorist group Hamas that has a stick up its "wherever" about the Jewish people. Which is a separate can of worms.) And there was a time the Christians were the targets of the same hysteria, the early Christians, by the Romans. We all know it is wrong to smear people with these kinds of outlandish claims, that have no basis in reality. And I don't even care what religion you are. We all have an inner sense that this is . . . not for the best, to put it mildly. Some of those ancient Chinese religions would say that these things "tend not toward edification" or are "opposed to the way of life." If you're into that whole WWJD idea, there are some parts of the Bible that make a pretty good case against scapegoating being any kind of a virtue. For that matter, the crucifix a lot of people casually wear around their necks, or as earrings, makes a pretty solid case against that mentality, all by itself. So if you care enough to read my stuff, please take the time to think twice and to refuse to spread paranoid tripe about other people.

And I hope you enjoy the nicer weather.

National Weather Service Birmingham Meteorologists surveyed storm

damage in and near the Locust Fork area of Blount County on

Saturday, September 19. The survey team found a broad area

impacted by damaging winds generally across portions of Blount

County west of Locust Fork. Damage surveyors found widespread

small tree limb damage with a few large tree limbs down and a

couple of uprooted trees sporadically through the wind damage

area. There was no signature of convergence or divergence observed

in the wind damage pattern, indicative of straight line winds.

The majority of the area appeared to experience damaging winds

from 40-50 mph with a pocket of higher winds from 50-60 mph. The

structural damage observed in the area appeared to be the result

of falling tree limbs or tree limbs falling onto power lines.
