Severe T-Storm Warning

This thunderstorm has gone severe a little ahead of schedule in Northwest Alabama.

7:22 PM - Places like Red Bay, Belgreen, Bear Creek Reservoir, need to stay sheltered from this. Winds could exceed 60 mph and the hail looks just under severe limits, a little less than quarter-sized or an inch in diameter.

Best place is a small central room or hallway on the lowest floor of a sturdy house. But at least stay away from any windows until this passes. And if you can be on the ground floor instead of an upper floor, that is better. Just to be on the safe side.

That stuff in Tennessee, the tan polygons, those are strong thunderstorms that have prompted special weather statements but are not strong enough to merit severe thunderstorm warnings. A severe thunderstorm warning means a storm is believed to be producing winds of 50 knots or greater or hail at least one inch in diameter. That is 58 mph winds or hail the size of a quarter.

7:33 - The weather has really been crazy out in Arkansas up through the Midwest, saw where Ohio had an impressive-looking tornado earlier this evening (when I was not tuned in to the weather). Kansas had one yesterday, but I believe it stayed over mostly open country. Our severe weather threat still looks to be on the lower end, but some potential does exist for a few storms to reach severe limits. And we have to respect that.

If you live in a mobile home, you might consider spending the night with a friend or loved one who has a more substantial structure that you could take shelter in, if they are welcoming. Same thing if you live in a top-floor apartment or a house sitting up on blocks. We probably will just see some strong wind gusts and maybe some borderline-severe hail around here, but sometimes it is better to err on the side of caution and go ahead and be in the safest place you can be. That way if the weather does get too out of hand, like the damaging winds are hitting you directly, you can just get into the bathroom or hallway, whatever the lowest part of the house is without any windows, near the center there. So that even if a tree were to fall or a window were to break out, chances are you'd be just fine.

And this is nothing to get worked up about. The severe threat here is low, and anything like that should stay isolated. But from now through about Noon tomorrow, there could be periods that we see strong thunderstorms. We'll see a lot of rain overnight, high confidence in that. But isolated severe thunderstorms are also possible.

7:40 - And while I was yacking away, the severe thunderstorm warning has been extended into Franklin and Colbert Counties, the storm heading up toward places like Cherokee and then aiming at Tuscumbia.

Also have a storm that has reached severe limits in Hardin County, Tennessee, affecting places like Savannah.

7:44 PM - Important note, emergency management reported a power line blown down in North Tremont, MS when these storms came through. So we have some ground truth with these warnings. The yellow polygons are severe thunderstorm warnings. Leaving the tan polygons on there because they are special weather statements to let you know that storms in those areas are strong but are currently believed to be below severe limits. If that gets confusing later I may turn the statements off, but for now, think that in-between alert is a good heads-up for people in case they are watching to see if a storm intensifies.
