Winter Weather Advisory Extended Into Parts of North Alabama

The purple counties are a hard freeze warning. Counties in blue are where this freezing rain threat is expected.

1:36 PM - Radar now showing mostly regular rain over North Alabama, some freezing rain over Southern Tennessee, and some snow in Northern Mississippi, West of the Alabama and Tennessee state lines. So things definitely are not boring still.

1:38 - Great point from the Weather Service in Huntsville. Even if this rain does not freeze in all of our area, where it is above freezing (for a change) the water can stick to ice that is already there and make travel problems more of an issue. Another thing is that overnight tonight most of us will get below freezing again, at least by tomorrow morning, so things can refreeze. And we have another cold blast behind this front that will really settle in tomorrow night through Sunday. So it is really a big mess. When you have to drive, please take it slow and be extra careful, try not to slam on your brakes since that makes skidding on the ice worse. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on driving in this, most of what I know comes from a meteorology professor who had lived in the Dakotas, best I remember. But I'd take it really slow and allow plenty of room between you and whoever is in front of you.
