(Note)

A couple days ago was the anniversary of the surprise winter storm of January 28, 2014. Forecasts did call for some light snow and maybe some ice in the mix, but I don't think anybody was prepared for what happened. The National Weather Service in Birmingham does a great job of archiving events and the meteorological details.

(Discussion)

This day has been half-and-half for the Tennessee Valley. First part of the day, plenty of sunshine and very calm conditions. Now as we got into the afternoon and dark hours, things have clouded up in a hurry, and we've got quite a breeze. We are partly cloudy and 55 degrees in Cullman as we approach the 9:00 hour. The dewpoint is 39, making the relative humidity 55%. Winds are from the Northwest at 15 miles per hour, with higher gusts to 24 mph. The pressure is 30.02 inches and rising. Our High today was 63, and this morning's Low got all the way down to 25. So very dry air last night and this morning.

Jasper is partly cloudy with a temperature of 57 degrees. The dewpoint is 46, making the relative humidity 67%. Winds are out of the Northwest at 10 miles per hour with higher gusts to 16 mph. The pressure is 30.02 inches and rising. The High in Jasper was 66 with a Low of 27. You know, I forecast 28 degrees or maybe 29 for Cullman, and this morning's cold overperformed just a little bit. I personally saw frost on the ground when I ventured out around daybreak. And I see from the observations that Jasper did deal with some freezing fog at one point this morning. You actually have to watch that sometimes, can make the roads a little slick. Good rule of thumb is to just take it a little slower and be more careful in the winter time. Maybe that's common sense, but modern life is so busy that common sense often falls by the wayside. So I give reminders every now and then, especially since I need them, never won any awards for being a great driver or anything.

Skies are fair (which means clear) in Haleyville, the home of 911. The temperature is 54 degrees with a dewpoint temperature of 39, which makes the relative humidity 57%. Winds are from the Northwest at 10 mph. The pressure is 30.05 inches, which is the same as 1017.2 millibars, and rising slowly like at the other sites around here. And I don't know why the other sites don't all give it in millibars. I could convert it each time I write up one of these, but that seems like an awful lot of work for such a minor detail when I'd rather focus on putting all this data together to make a decent forecast. So for the time being, Haleyville is the only site that gets millibars mentioned. Because they report it that way as well as in inches. And God bless them too. Because millibars are what are used on the weather maps.

Anyway I got sidetracked. Haleyville had a High of 63 and Low of 26 today. These are some pretty cold mornings sometimes, but I'm just glad we finally got all that ice melted. That was a rough week lately when it kept hanging around and refreezing.

Fort Payne is 48 degrees with rain and fog, knocking the visibility down to 5 miles. Gadsden has light rain and 55 degrees. Decatur is clear and 56, with winds gusting up to nearly 30 mph. Huntsville is similarly breezy, partly cloudy and 55. Muscle Shoals is fair and 54. Tupelo, ditto. Also calm winds there, which is a novelty tonight. Memphis has clear skies and 52 degrees. Nashville is another blustery location tonight with partly cloudy skies and 43 degrees. They had a High of 59 today in the Music City and a morning Low of 28. Odd how that works sometimes, we had a colder morning in Cullman, Jasper, and Haleyville than they did up in Nashville.

We've got a closed Low up in the Ohio River Valley, swinging a weak cold front through here this evening/tonight. Which is why we have a few showers over the Eastern counties of the Tennessee River Valley down this way.

Tomorrow we have Northwest wind flow aloft (wind follows those isobars that connect areas of equal pressure, although this is an upper-air map forecast, the top graphic, which is a little different, technically it uses 500 millibars as an approximation of 18,000 feet . . . but that's too complicated to explain here, would require its own post, but the basic idea is still true, you follow those lines, you see areas of equal air pressure and from that you see how the winds are flowing up at about 18,000 feet off the ground. The bottom map is more predicting things at the surface) and High pressure moving in from the Mississippi River Valley (I love to mention rivers tonight for some reason, hey, they're good landmarks). We'll start the day down around 32-34 degrees and then warm up to about 50 degrees in the afternoon, some of us, especially further North you go, may only see upper 40's.

And we'll have a good northerly breeze hanging around tomorrow despite the clear skies, some gradient winds from the pressure change. So that will make it feel nippier, just words to the wise who sort of like to know how cold it is before they venture out with or without something extra like a jacket.

The ridge of high pressure is strongly over our region on Thursday, and we'll see a High in the upper 50's, Low in the upper 20's or maybe even mid-20's sort of like this morning was. Skies staying sunny. Winds calming down and actually shifting back around to the West, or since that's on the 500 millibar/~18,000 feet map, probably more like Southwest down at the surface, tends to rotate by about 45 degrees on the compass from upper-level to surface.

Then on Friday with that systme gradually moving through the region, skies staying mostly sunny, should see a High in the lower 60's and a Low in the lower 30's.

Then on Saturday our next system is still far enough to the West that we should not see any rain, well maybe late at night, but if it comes after midnight, then technically that rain belongs to Sunday, not Saturday. But we should stay dry during the daylight hours anyway. Clouds will increase a little bit, especially toward the dark hours. High should be in the lower to mid 60's and the Low in the mid, maybe upper 30's.

Then on Sunday it looks like that system will bring us a decent rainy day. Showers are likely throughout the day and night, periods of showers.

And let's look at the rest of our extended period on more standard weather maps. So rain is likely with that front coming in on Sunday, the morning Low rebounding into the 40's from the extra moisture, and then the High getting knocked down into the 50's, probably mid-50's.

Then Monday, the front stalling out briefly, and we'll keep a 40% chance of scattered rain showers in the forecast, High in mid-50's again, Low in the lower 40's.

And then on Tuesday it's on out of here, with sunny skies returning, High in the 50's, Low in the 30's.

Rainfall totals will probably be about an inch or less on the Alabama side, and for Tennessee counties, generally less than a half-inch for the Southern counties, but even less than that, like a quarter-inch or lower as you get up into Middle and Northern Tennessee. Some places along the Gulf Coast could see closer to two inches. But we're concerned with the counties of North Alabama with a nod to the counties of Southern Middle Tennessee with these forecasts on this blog. So generally under one inch, and for the Tennessee folks, probably under a half-inch for most of you. We're getting the rain we need to get out of the drought though. Just a couple rainy days doesn't disrupt things too much like when we had several days of rain in a row lately, heavy rains sometimes. It's been kind of an interesting season so far.

Quick Update

The morning round of rain really stabilized the atmosphere, and it is going to be hard for it to recover enough to support any of this afternoon or evening's thunderstorms becoming severe.

The Storm Prediction Center has kept trimming the severe weather outlook area farther to the East so that now is is for places like Huntsville, Scottsboro, Fort Payne, Guntersville, Arab, maybe Holly Pond down to Blountsville, certainly includes Gadsden. Fayetteville and Winchester are included in the risk on the Tennessee side of the border. The risk is East of I-65.

And the reason for that is that the Eastern counties are the only places with any hope of the air destabilizing before this line of showers and storms back in Mississippi catches up. From now to about 7 PM there is a very low risk of an isolated storm or two within that outlooked area reaching severe limits.

On the off-chance you were to get a warning today, just remember the basic ideas:

You want to be in a sturdy house or other building anchored to the ground if possible, rather than in a mobile home.

Get to a small room or hallway on the lowest floor, and try to make it near the center of the house if you can, instead of at the edge of the house. Make sure you stay away from any windows, just in case the winds could break the glass.

But this risk is really low.

Our wind advisory from the brief wake low this morning was allowed to expire on time.

But a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Central Alabama, including Walker, Winston, and Blount Counties. Which are all counties that border Cullman. We do have more rain coming this afternoon and evening.

If any storms really fire up, it should be East of the interstate, probably in far Northeast Alabama or adjacent parts of Tennessee.

And it does bear watching up that way, because dewpoints are already recovering into the 60's while that line of rain approaching the Alabama state line.

It is a borderline situation, but we do have just enough breaks in the clouds to allow some marginal destabilization. The wind shear is also strong in Northeast Alabama.

(Notes)

There is a Flood Warning in effect for the Paint Rock River. And there are a few other pockets of river flooding around the region.

If you'd like to check on our drought, here is the latest from the National Weather Service in Huntsville. This recent rain is helping.

The National Weather Service in Nashville is holding a Severe Weather Awareness Day in about a month.

(Discussion)

It was an overcast day in the Tennessee Valley with periods of rain, fog, thunder, and breeziness. Winds were variable but most often from the South and West. And it was a pretty muggy day for January. The High in Cullman was 66, and the Low was 59. Jasper saw a High of 70 and Low of 59. The High was 66 in Haleyville with a Low of 58 this morning. Gadsden had a High of 69 and Low of 58. Fort Payne had a High of 69 and Low of 59. Decatur had a High of 68 and Low of 58. Huntsville had a High of 68 and Low of 57. Muscle Shoals had a High of 65 and Low of 58.

Elsewhere around the region, Savannah had a High of 61 and Low of 55. Fayetteville had a High of 66 and a Low of 57. Winchester had a High of 68 and Low of 57. Memphis had a High of 62 and Low of 56. Tupelo had a High of 64 and Low of 58. Corinth had a High of 63 and Low of 54. Birmingham had a High of 70 and Low of 57. Atlanta had a High of 72 and Low of 62. And Nashville had a High of 63 and a Low of 57 today.

We've got that steep Southwest wind flow at the upper levels of the atmosphere and a surface front that is stalled out over the region.

As that system gets moving over the next couple days, it will bring more rounds of rain, which could be heavy at times, and also some storms in the mix.

There have been some hints in model guidance of a squall line trying to develop on Saturday as the low pressure system moves through Alabama, but the risk of any severe thunderstorms in the Tennessee Valley is very low, as instability looks to be slim to none.

Dewpoints are going to have a hard time even making it up to 60 degrees Saturday afternoon, so it is just barely enough to keep an eye on, for an isolated stronger storm or two.

So tonight should feature a Low in the upper 50's again, tomorrow the High only getting up to about 65 with an overcast day but rain staying somewhat scattered compared to what it's been. May have to look out for some fog, mainly in the morning.

Then we'll be breezy and just covered up in rain for Saturday as the Low moves through the region. The High may edge up into the upper 60's, Low should be in the mid-to-upper-50's again.

Then Sunday behind the front, clouds should gradually be on the decrease throughout the day. I think we'll see the sun, just more clouds overall. It will stay breezy, and we might see an isolated shower Saturday night or really early Sunday morning, but overall an end to the rain starting Sunday. And we'll cool off again, starting the day near 40 degrees and only warming to the upper 40's.

Then high pressure approaches from the West on Monday, and our clearing trend continues. Should see mostly sunny skies overall, starting the day down in the 30's, mid-30's, and only warming to about 50 degrees in the afternoon.

Then the ridge of high pressure will start to build over our region after a dry warm frontal boundary passes through on Tuesday. Should start the day Tuesday around 30 and warm to the upper 50's, skies staying mostly sunny.

Then basically the same thing Wednesday and Thursday with Highs in the mid-to-upper-50's and Lows in the lower-to-mid-30's.

Friday also looks dry on model guidance with the next chance of rain coming Saturday or Sunday. The two main global models, GFS and ECMWF, are split on it, with the GFS showing a Low coming out of the Gulf from the East that could bring us some rain. And the ECMWF showing a system from out West that will come through the Gulf but maybe bring us some rain this far North too. Looks like a High near 60 and Low near 40 for Friday, then similar Highs for Saturday and Sunday but with Lows coming up further into the 40's with more abundant moisture. Still it looks like rain should stay pretty isolated or widely scattered around here. And that's trying to look out ten days. I guess that's okay to do now that the pattern has settled down a little bit. Just understand that when you get into the 7-10 day range, you're looking more at general trends, and specifics of each day's forecast starts to become more of an educated guess. And I'm not always sure about the "educated" part.

Whether you look at the national forecast from the Weather Prediction Center or the local forecast from the National Weather Service in Birmingham, looks like we could see 2-3 inches of additional rainfall. So of course, if you live in a flood-prone area, be cautious, never cross any water that covers the roadway. Considering how much rain we've gotten already though, we've gotten through this major soaker event so far without too many such problems in the region, and the Flash Flood Watch has been cancelled for most of North Alabama, remains in effect for Central Alabama. Anyway we needed the rain, and we certainly needed the warmer temperatures to melt last week's slush all the way outta' here. And next week looks really nice, about as good as it gets in January.

And since I hardly ever get feedback, here's an experiment: If you like this blog, please leave me a comment. I am just curious as to whether I'd even get a handful of people that would like it to continue, even if it has to be more occasional than when I was a full-time meteorology student, once upon a time.

Winter Weather Advisory Extended Into Parts of North Alabama

The purple counties are a hard freeze warning. Counties in blue are where this freezing rain threat is expected.

1:36 PM - Radar now showing mostly regular rain over North Alabama, some freezing rain over Southern Tennessee, and some snow in Northern Mississippi, West of the Alabama and Tennessee state lines. So things definitely are not boring still.

1:38 - Great point from the Weather Service in Huntsville. Even if this rain does not freeze in all of our area, where it is above freezing (for a change) the water can stick to ice that is already there and make travel problems more of an issue. Another thing is that overnight tonight most of us will get below freezing again, at least by tomorrow morning, so things can refreeze. And we have another cold blast behind this front that will really settle in tomorrow night through Sunday. So it is really a big mess. When you have to drive, please take it slow and be extra careful, try not to slam on your brakes since that makes skidding on the ice worse. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on driving in this, most of what I know comes from a meteorology professor who had lived in the Dakotas, best I remember. But I'd take it really slow and allow plenty of room between you and whoever is in front of you.
