Severe T-Storm Warning

Radarscope is hiccupping but I can tell you that before the warning came out, this storm blew some hail at my windows. It was noticeable.

All right so all the wya up to Holly Pond and places like Baileyton, probably need to stay in a good safe place until this storm passes, to be on the safe side. Going to peek outside and see how large the hail was. It started blowing against the house suddenly, caught at least part of the core of this supercell thunderstorm. We are fortunate that the environment mainly favored "hailers" this evening and tonight rather than tornadoes.

1:56 AM - Ok so any hailstones melted before I got a look at them. It must have been small hail, just sounded kind of startling since had a decent gust of wind with it, sounded like. Be aware though that damaging wind gusts are also possible with this storm.

1:58 - Which is definitely over into Eastern parts of Cullman County now. Not sure if a warning will have to be extended into any parts of Blount or Marshall Counties, but this is a supercell thunderstorm out by itself. I think the hail was under severe limits, and the wind, when it passed through my location. That doesn't necessarily mean that no damage has occurred elsewhere. Tough to tell at night, does look fairly impressive on radar at times.

Ok the National Weather Service in Huntsville is now saying that golfball-sized hail is possible with this storm.

Remember that it may also produce wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. Large hail blowing around in really high winds can sometimes damage or break out windows. Definitely stay away from windows if in the path of this storm, and ideally you'd want to be in a small central space on the lowest floor of a house.

2:09 AM - Okay, the National Weather Service in Birmingham thinks the hail may be closer to nickel size in this storm as it affects parts of Northern Blount County, including Blountsville and Snead, may also have wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour, which is pretty strong, but under severe limits.

2:14 - And the NWS Huntsville is allowing this warning to expire, as the storm has weakened below severe limits. So Birmingham made a good call. The storm sort of pulsed up in strength as it moved through Cullman County and now is in a weaker phase again.

2:17 - And since the internet is running slow and Radarscope is screwing up so much, I'm not going to bother trying to post any more radar imagery here. Severe thunderstorm is over. Just rain in Cullman County now.

Special Weather Statement

1:37 AM - Here's an update on the storm.

They definitely aren't kidding about the lightning. The hail and gusty winds are thought to be under severe limits though. Warnings are not issued based on how bad the lightning is in a storm. As one forecaster put it in a Skywarn class, they'd run us crazy if they did that.

Forecast

The front is going to stall out with us on the cold side of it.

Tomorrow we'll have plenty of rounds of showers with a High near 70. Will have to watch for issues with flash flooding, at least in Northwest Alabama up into Tennessee counties.

Then Friday and Saturday, staying overcast with several rounds of rain showers likely throughout these days and even the night hours too, Highs about 60, Lows near 50.

Easter Sunday, looks like partly to mostly sunny skies, the High in the lower-to-mid-60's and the morning Low in the upper 40's.

The nights will stay cool with the Lows in upper 40's or near 50, but we'll begin a gradual warming trend next week, plenty of sunshine, reaching the upper 70's for the High by Tuesday.

There are no more signs of severe weather any time soon around here, even though of course we remain in our primary severe weather season, severe season really isn't over until the end of May. For now we get a break. And it looks like the whole country does. So best wishes to people doing the storm surveys and helping clean things up and try to put things back together.

Special Weather Statement

So we mostly lucked out as far as a severe weather threat today, but this gust front along the squall line may still cause a few problems, mainly tree damage where it does anything.

Technically it is an outflow boundary ahead of the storms that has been causing the problems. So for something like this they'll issue a Special Weather Statement or a High Wind Warning like we saw on March 3 I guess, not a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. Because it isn't exactly thunderstorm winds, plus they are estimated just under criteria for severe.

Just as a passing comment, I am nonplussed by how much severe weather has happened, so widespread, lately. I don't think the surveys are even complete from the last two events, much less yesterday's. Hats off to the people working so hard to sort it out and put it in the database so that maybe we can learn from what all has happened lately and improve future forecasts, watches, warnings. And there are issues about public safety too. People can care about them or not, but a lot of people living in poverty or otherwise in vulnerable communities really do not have access to the shelter they need from a big tornado outbreak.

7:06 - The Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Monrovia had its steeple blown off by the high winds. Brad Travis passed on a picture of that from Renee Renner.

So especially if you've got trees outside, might want to head inside to a good safe place until these storms pass. Could at least break a few limbs here and there.

7:18 PM - And that's the only place that really looks concerning at all now, as the line of showers/storms pushes into Northeast Alabama. The outflow boundary ahead of the line is the main focus for any damaging wind gusts.

7:20 - Better radar image, shows that the Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been completely cleared now.

7:22 - Remember that we will have a risk for flooding as this front stalls out though. If you see water covering a roadway - turn around, don't drown.

Special Weather Statement

6:05 PM - Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin Counties in NW AL have been cleared from Severe Thunderstorm Watch now that squall line is past there. They remain under a Flood Watch, and the Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues for Tennessee counties.

6:08 - Section of storms approaching Decatur looking kind of rowdy, uptick in lightning and higher winds showing up on radar at times.

6:14 - NWS Huntsville reports there was pea-sized hail with these storms in Moulton and estimate winds at 40-50 miles per hour, so right below severe limits.

6:16 - Still got some strong winds in this part of the storms moving into Decatur, might be a good idea to be away from windows and in a sturdy house, near the center, down on lower floor, to play it safe, especially if you've got trees around or anything that might make more vulnerable to winds.

6:19 - Hail also showing up well on radar, but this was recently reported as pea-sized, has to be quarter-sized to be severe.

6:28 - Now that strongest storm in the line is moving from Decatur toward Madison and Huntsville. Expecting strong winds of about 40-50 mph and pea-sized hail with this storm.

6:31 - Other storms in line seem to be weakening, but this one is just under what would be considered severe criteria as far as the winds. So here is a better look at it for anyone up Huntsville way.

And a similar storm just over the TN state line.

6:45 PM - Giles and Lawrence Counties in Tennessee have been cleared from the watch.

A flood watch will remain in effect after marginal severe thunderstorm threat has ended behind the squall line. That's the green color you see. Severe thunderstorm watch is pink.
